Police: Man arrested for killing friend with iron rod after drunken argument

Police said the suspect hit the victim over the head with an iron rod. He was arrested at Phuthaditjhaba court while appearing for another matter.

The Free State police arrested a suspect for allegedly beating his friend to death with an iron rod in Maboshwane Village, Qwaqwa on Monday, 1 August.


South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said officers were called to the scene at approximately 11:00 on Monday.

When they entered the house the victim, who was later identified as Sipho Mosia, was found lying on the floor.

According to the police report, the two friends got home around 5:00 after a night out. They sat by a coal stove and drank beer before getting into an argument that turned violent. “The suspect hit the victim with an iron rod on the head,” said Mophiring.

The suspect was arrested at the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court while he was appearing for another matter in which he is accused. He will return to court on a charge of murder on Wednesday, 3 August.

In an unrelated incident in the Eastern Cape, the police arrested a 37-year-old man for allegedly killing John Mehlo with a nail-studded plank on Monday.

The suspect allegedly killed Mehlo after they were involved in an argument in the Kuyga Community Centre.
