Around 20 learners injured in M19 scholar transport accident

Between 15 and 20 learners were injured in a serious scholar transport accident on the M19 near Reservoir Hills.

Multiple school learners were injured in a serious taxi accident on the M19 near Reservoir Hills in KwaZulu-Natal just after 07:00 on Friday morning.

LEARNERS INJURED IN M19 ACCIDENT

According to ALS Paramedics Medical Services, they arrived on the scene to find that a single taxi carrying school children had lost control and overturned multiple times coming to rest on the centre island.

Immediately more ambulances and Advanced Life Support Paramedics were dispatched to the scene to assist.

“Around 15 to 20 children sustained various injuries ranging from moderate to serious were stabilised on the scene before being transported to various hospitals in Durban for the further treatment that they required.

“At this stage the events leading up to the accident are unknown however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.”

PUPILS HIT BY BUS IN SEBOKENG

In a separate incident this week, one learner died while seven other learners were injured when they were allegedly hit by a bus in Sebokeng, Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng.

The incident happened on Wednesday morning morning by the hostel pickup point in Sebokeng. The pupils who are all from Dinokaneng Secondary School were reportedly hit by a scholar transport bus at the pickup point while boarding to get to school.

According to the Gauteng Department of Education, one learner died while three learners were hospitalised and four others sustained minor injuries.

Spokesperson, Steve Mabona said information at their disposal confirms that the learners were rushed to a local medical facility. 

Mabona said one learner succumbed to injuries while receiving medical attention, and three learners were hospitalised due to the severity of their injuries. Four learners were identified to have sustained minor injuries. 

“Police have launched an investigation into circumstances surrounding the accident. Our Psycho-Social Team has been dispatched to the school for necessary support.”
