A total of seven vehicles, five taxis and two bakkies were impounded for overloading and transporting school children without valid permits in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has impounded five taxis and two bakkies during a stop and search in Lebowakgomo on Wednesday, 18 January 2023.

Arrive Alive reported that the taxis and the bakkies were overloaded with school children and operated without valid permits.

All seven vehicles were impounded and are at the Lebowakgomo Traffic Station. The drivers fined R6 500 each.”

DRIVERS HAD NO VALID PERMITS TO TRANSPORT CHILDREN

The Department says parents must ensure the drivers transporting their children has valid permits.

“Learners are also encouraged to report overloading in the vehicles that transport them to school.”

Here are tips from the Department of Transport:

  • Check your service provider’s credentials, including permits and driving license
  • Ensure that the vehicle is roadworthy
  • Have the contact details of the driver available
  • Familiarise yourself with the parents/caregivers of other children using the transport service
  • Start a WhatsApp group in case of an emergency
  • Sensitize your child on personal safety and to report any suspicious behaviour

This Gauteng scholar transport safety operations is part of intensified efforts to clamp down on unroadworthy and non-compliant scholar transport vehicles.

Diale-Tlabela says the department wants to ensure that the taxis and bakkies transporting school children are in good condition and compliant.

“Furthermore, as part of Aga Le Rona Road maintenance programme, the departments road maintenance teams will be fixing potholes and road signage in the area.”
