London memorial service and books of condolence for Nelson Mandela

From placing flowers at the Mandela statue to attending Wednesday’s memorial service in London, here’s how South Africans in Britain can pay their respects to Nelson Mandela.

Members of the public can pay tribute to Nelson Mandela by signing the condolence book at the SA High Commission in London at the public entrance from 9am to 7pm on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 December and from 9am to 4:30pm on Wednesday 11 to Friday 13 December.

A book of condolence has also opened for members of the public to sign at St Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey.

Further books will open at Coventry Cathedral, the city of peace and reconciliation, and at Leeds Civic Hall, after Mandela was made a Freeman of Leeds in 2001.

Memorial service at St Martin-in-the-Fields

Wednesday 11 December 10.30am to 12pm

  • Sir Sydney Kentridge KCMG, QC – Represented Nelson Mandela, Treason Trial 1958-61, Steve Biko 1977, Acting Justice South African Constitutional Court 1995-96
  • Lord Joffe of Lidington CBE – Represented Nelson Mandela, Rivonia Trial 1963-64
  • Mama Thembi Nobadula – ANC veteran and participant in the women’s march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria in 1956.
  • Address – Dr Sam Wells, Vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields

The official memorial service is organised by the South African High Commission.
