Eskom are pulling the plug once again on Tuesday, as Mzansi comes to terms with “round the clock” load shedding. Here’s what you need to know…

Stage 4 load shedding will come back into play for the majority of Tuesday 19 March, with the scheduled cuts taking effect from 9:00 and lasting until 23:00. It’s the fourth consecutive day we’ve hit this stage, and there was barely any respite from Eskom overnight.

Stage 4 load shedding, Tuesday 19 March

The power giants – who have brought us such classics as “load shedding on the weekend” and “load shedding in summer” – have come up with another creative way to pull the plug on the power. They’ve started implementing “round the clock” load shedding. From 23:00 on Monday night to 9:00 on Tuesday, Stage 2 blackouts are in force.

It marks one of the most dismal times in Eskom’s recent history. Their failure to keep Mzansi illuminated is bordering on the territory of “embarrassing”. There’s also a good chance the same schedule (Stage 2 overnight, Stage 4 in the day) will be rolled out on Wednesday and Thursday morning, too.

“Stage 4 load shedding will be implemented on Tuesday 19 March from 9:00 – 23:00. This is due to a shortage of capacity. There is no need for alarm, as this is a highly controlled process which protects the system from total collapse or a nationwide blackout.”

“We appeal to customers to switch off geysers during the day as well as all non-essential appliances, in order to assist in reducing demand.”

Eskom issue their statement

However, despite the major inconvenience posed to a large majority of South Africans, the power utility has also been on the charm offensive. They maintain 80% of the grid is still in operation across the country and that engineers are working “around the clock” to rectify these issues.
