The dreaded load shedding is returning on Thursday, with Stage 2 being implemented from 05:00 to 16:00.

ESKOM TO UP LOAD SHEDDING STAGES

Eskom said they would increase to Stage 4 load shedding from 16:00 to midnight on Thursday.

This is due to the continued shortage of generation capacity on Wednesday, said spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha.

“Due to shortage of generation capacity, coupled with the higher demand due to the colder weather, Stage 2 loadshedding will be implemented… tomorrow.”

Loadshedding will then increase during the evening peak period on Thursday, he said.

BLACKOUTS LIKELY TO CONTINUE ON FRIDAY

He said it is likely that load shedding will continue on Friday. This time, it will drop to Stage 2 from 05:00 to midnight.

“This loadshedding will also assist in recovering emergency generation reserves, which have been utilised extensively to meet the increased demand over the last few days.”

“the capacity constraints are exacerbated in the delay in returning a generation unit to service each Arnot, Koeberg and Kusile Power stations. This includes the unplanned breakdowns of a generation unit each at Camden, Grootvlei, Lethabo, Majuba, Medupi and two units at Hendrina power stations.”

“While the return of Unit 2 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station is anticipated for Friday night, should there be further delays, or other unit breakdowns, loadshedding might have to be extended into the weekend. Eskom will promptly communicate any further significant changes.”

said Mantshantsha.

The power utility currently has 2 931MW on planned maintenance, while another 15 040MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.

“Eskom would like to remind the public that load shedding is implemented only as a last resort to protect the national grid. We, therefore, urge all South Africans to continue using electricity sparingly, especially during these uncertain times on the power system.”
