Initially, there was serious concerns over a potential move to Stage 7 in December 2022 after Eskom took unit 1 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station offline. This is one of our most reliable units because it produces close to 1000MW of power. Unit 1 will be offline until July this year while Unit 2, which also produces close to 1000MW, is expected to go offline in October this year. Unfortunately, the bad news does not stop here.

TOUCH YEAR AHEAD FOR SOUTH AFRICANS AND ESKOM

Even if everything works out according to plan, South Africa will be short 1,000MW throughout 2023.

This is made far worse by the fact that 3,000MW will be offline until 2024 after critical failures occurred at the Medupi and Kusile power stations.

Furthermore, Eskom faces major diesel issues having spent over double it’s proposed budget in 2022 (on Diesel alone). However, that’s not all. Major infrastructure has been damaged as a result of the mass blackouts experienced throughout the country causing even more outages.

Therefore, South Africans can expect to experience frequent load shedding in 2023 with a strong possibility of entering stage 7 in the second half of the year.
