National power supplier Eskom implemented load reduction in seven provinces on Saturday morning.
Eskom said load reduction will take place between 05:00 and 09:00 while in other provinces it will be between 05:00 and 07:00.
In KwaZulu-Natal, Free State and Gauteng, load reduction was expected to be implemented between 06:00 and 09:00.
Eskom said it is currently battling to keep up with the increased equipment failure that is costing millions to repair, so load reduction serves to prevent network overloading in high-density areas.
“Overloading of networks leads to damage to the electricity infrastructure through explosions in overloaded transformers and mini-substations. It also poses danger to people and property in the affected communities,” the power supplier said.
Here are the areas affected:
Free State: Load reduction will be implemented in the Lejweputswa District thus affecting Phomolong and Phomolong township sections
Gauteng
KwaZulu-Natal
Eskom also urged customers to switch off all their electrical appliances during load reduction implementation to avoid possible damage due to power surges when supply returns.
“Failure to do so may lead to transformer trips or failures and damages to household appliances when supply is restored.”
Earlier on Saturday, load reduction was implemented in North West, Northern Cape, Limpopo and Mpumalanga between 05:00 and 19:00. It will be implemented again in Mpumalanga from 17:00 to 19:00 at night.
Here are some of the areas affected:
Mpumalanga: eHlanzeni
Northern Cape
North West
In Limpopo most areas affected are in the Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg Districts.
Residents have been urged not to report the power outage but instead report illegal connections and vandalism on electricity infrastructure.
