The Presidency has confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation once more on Sunday 12 September and provide a much anticipated update on government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and accompanying lockdown restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of the deadly virus.
Calls are mounting for Ramaphosa to urgently ease restrictions on movement and gatherings, as well as other lockdown laws restricting the sale of alcohol. It is expected that the President will shift the country down to a more relaxed lockdown level, with South Africa having languished in level 3 for over three months, running parallel to the arrival of the third wave of infections in July.

The president is also expected to outline the government’s plans to introduce a COVID-19 vaccine passport as part of a push to achieve herd immunity in the country.
Earlier this week, the South African liquor industry has warned in a recent statement that continued alcohol restrictions will lead to thousands of job losses.
