The Presidency has confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation once more on Sunday 12 September and provide a much anticipated update on government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and accompanying lockdown restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of the deadly virus.

Calls are mounting for Ramaphosa to urgently ease restrictions on movement and gatherings, as well as other lockdown laws restricting the sale of alcohol. It is expected that the President will shift the country down to a more relaxed lockdown level, with South Africa having languished in level 3 for over three months, running parallel to the arrival of the third wave of infections in July.

What to expect from tonight’s speech:

  • Increase the number of people allowed at outdoor venues from 100 to 250, and from 50 to 100 for indoor venues;
  • The curfew is expected to be pushed back to between 23h00 and 04h00;
  • Fewer restrictions on the sale of alcohol.

The president is also expected to outline the government’s plans to introduce a COVID-19 vaccine passport as part of a push to achieve herd immunity in the country.

Earlier this week, the South African liquor industry has warned in a recent statement that continued alcohol restrictions will lead to thousands of job losses.
