Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa is in a difficult position, he has been in one for a good few years now. Ramaphosa is trying to become the next president of South Africa, that means succession politics is always a game he is forced to play, especially when Zuma would rather have Dlamini-Zuma succeed him.

After the Gordhan axing and calamitous reshuffle, Ramaphosa spoke publically about his concern and objection to what took place. Both him and ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe expressed their concern over the list of ministers Zuma was appointing. The pair were not happy that Zuma did not consult the ANC top 6 on his plans, the president had already decided on his action.

This morning, an audio clip emerged from a Ramaphosa speech this past weekend. Giving the speech in KwaZulu-Natal he explained that the moment has arrived to get rid of “greedy and corrupt” people.

In the clip, he can be heard telling supporters that a process has begun that will end up triggering the renewal of the country.

“What is happening now is a process that is going to trigger that renewal … that renewal that we all need. What you are required to do as citizens of this country is to support, is to support the efforts that are going to be made by those who want to make sure that our country, our country lives up to the values of Nelson Mandela.”

Ramaphosa went on to say that South Africans all need to unite to make our country “corruption free.”  It is clear that the Deputy President is finally beginning the offensive against President Zuma, the real question is can he get enough ANC members to come together and outnumber the Zuma camp? It will be a tough ask but from the way Cyril is speaking, it looks like he is going to give it all he’s got. Listen to the speech below.
