A man who attempted to silence his child rape victims with money was sentenced to two life terms on Wednesday, 18 May. The 31-year-old rapist tried to buy the silence of his victims with R10. He was sentenced by the Mankweng Regional Court in Limpopo.

When and how did the rapes occur?

The incidents occurred in Toronto, Mankweng. In 2017, the man lured the two children, who were playing in the street, into a house. He called each child into the house on separate occasions. He promised to give them money.

After inviting them into the house, he would undress them before raping them, says Nationa Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi.

“The minors would follow him into the room, and he would undress them before raping them. He would give them R10 after the incident and warn them not to tell anyone,”

said Malabi-Dzhangi.

The first child who fell victim was 11 years old when the incident occurred. She told her mother about the traumatic situation 10 days after it happened. The matter was swiftly reported to the South African Police Services (SAPS).

The second victim was raped just two weeks later. She also informed her mother and after a few days, they opened a case with the SAPS.

The trial

The accused, during the trial, pleaded not guilty to both charges. His name is being withheld in order to protect the identity of his victims. Six witnesses were brought forward by the State, including two doctors who examined the minors.

J88 forms were handed by the State to work alongside the evidence given by the doctors about the injuries the girls faced. J88 forms are used to record injuries sustained by victims of a crime.

The impact the rape has had on the children

Due to the delay in the rapes being reported to the SAPS, there was no DNA evidence. The first victim has had a traumatic response to the horrific incident. The probation officer’s impact reports revealed that she struggles to fall asleep.

The child experiences nightmares and shouts her rapist’s name. She has since become reluctant to attend school. It has also been reported that there was a change in behaviour to her brother and that she has become disrespectful to family members.

The second victim faced concentration issues as her school performance slightly dropped. She has also become aggressive to other learners.

The result of the rapist’s court appearance

The State recommended, in the pre-sentence report, that the accused child rapist be sentenced to life imprisonment on both counts. Magistrate Fanie Reynold did not deviate from this and sentenced the accused to life imprisonment for each count of rape.

TimeLIVE reports that the sentences will run concurrently.
