This is according to information they received from the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) stating that Sanral’s e-tolling equipment has not been certified by the body.

Sanral did what they’ve been doing a lot of recently, denying the claims, but they’ve not been clear as to what exactly they’re disputing.

On top of that the passenger and rail agency asked for exemption from having their equipment certified, which was duly denied.

According to MyBroadband, the procedure that should ideally follow next goes something like this…

  • The CEO of the NRCS will set the certification requirements for Sanral’s cameras until a legal metrology technical regulation is established.
  • Once the NRCS and Sanral have agreed upon requirements, a request will be lodged with the SABS to develop a South African National Standard (SANS).
  • After the SANS specification is developed, the Minister of Trade and Industry will declare it a legal metrology technical regulation.

According to the FF+, until the equipment has been certified and calibrated it can not be legally used.

So, without further ado, here’s the NCRS’ letter sent to the FF+; explaining that there are no regulations currently in place for Sanral’s equipment.
