Light snowfall is expected to make landfall TODAY in parts of SA

The South African Weather Service said light snowfall is expected in parts of SA on TODAY. Here is more information on the affected areas.

Light snowfall is expected in parts of South Africa today in these areas. 

NEWS JUST IN – LIGHT SNOWFALL WILL MAKE LANDFALL ON SUNDAY

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned that light snowfall is expected on the mountains in the following areas: 

  • Sutherland
  • Calivinia

“Light snowfalls on the mountains could result in isolated loss of vulnerable livestock. Slippery conditions due to icy roads on mountain passes could result in some isolated disruption.” 

The SAWS furthermore advised the public to keep their livestock in shelters and avoid traveling on icy roads.

THE PUBLIC IS ADVISED TO AVOID TRAVELING ON ICY ROADS

Snowfall is expected to make landfall on Sunday afternoon around 19:00 and continue until 23:00.

Meanwhile, the SAWS issued a level 2 warning for damaging waves for the following areas: 

  • M_Cederberg
  • Lamberts Bay
  • M_Matzikama
  • Strandfontein
  • M_Kamiesberg 
  • Hondeklip Bay
  • M_Nama Khoi 
  • Kleinzee
  • M_Richtersveld
  • Port Nolloth

The damaging waves are expected from Saturday evening until Sunday afternoon. 

“Difficulty in navigation at sea for small vessels and personal water craft (e.g. kayaks) is possible. 

Small vessels are at risk of taking on water and capsizing in the locality. Localised disruption of small harbours and ports, as well as beachfront activities, is also likely.” 

The SAWS warned that small vessels are advised to seek shelter in harbours, bays, or inlets.

THIS COMES AFTER SNOWFALL WAS CONFIRMED IN PARTS OF SA LAST MONTH

This comes after several parts of South Africa had snowfall last month. The following areas had confirmed snowfall:

Here is where snow has been confirmed on Friday afternoon:

  • Lesotho
  • Underberg
  • Drakensberg Mountains 
  • Worcester mountains

FARMERS URGED TO SHELTER ANIMALS

It furthermore warned that the accumulation of snow might result in isolated loss of vulnerable livestock and snowmelt resulting in slippery driving conditions.

The SAWS urged small stock farmers are encouraged to shelter animals. Residents should dress warmly and avoid high mountain passes.
