The SA Weather Service issued a level 6 warning for HAILSTORMS and floods for TODAY in these parts of SA. Here are the areas.

A level 6 warning for HAILSTORMS and floods was issued for TODAY in these parts of South Africa. 

THE LEVEL 6 WARNING IS IN PLACE FROM MIDDAY UNTIL MIDNIGHT

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) said flash flooding of roads, susceptible settlements, and danger to life in crossing fast-flowing streams. 

“Large amounts of small hail/large hail can cause damage to vehicles and difficult driving conditions, especially where heavy downpours are present. These conditions can lead to major travel disruptions and can be aggravated by possible falling trees blocking major roads. 

“Loss of agricultural production is also likely, together with disruption to essential services.”

THESE ARE THE AREAS THAT WILL BE AFFECTED: 

  • Bergrivier / Redelinghuys
  • Cederberg / Clanwilliam
  • Witzenberg / Ceres
  • Karoo Hoogland / Sutherland
  • Saldanha Bay / Langebaan
  • Swartland / Malmesbury
  • Laingsburg
  • Prince Albert
  • Kannaland / Ladismith
  • Swellendam
  • Langeberg / Robertson
  • Hessequa / Riversdale
  • Swellendam
  • Overstrand / Hermanus

The warning is in place from 12:00 until midnight on Friday.

‘STAY INDOORS AND AWAY FROM METAL OBJECTS’

The SAWS advised staying indoors, where possible, away from metal objects. Do not seek shelter under trees or tall objects. 

Stay away from fishing or playing golf, as golf clubs and fishing rods are good.

Meanwhile, a level 4 warning for the severe warning was issued for more areas of the country. 

The SAWS furthermore warned that large amounts of small hail/large hail could cause damage to vehicles and difficult driving conditions, especially where heavy downpours are present.

  • Oudtshoorn

  • Mossel Bay / Mosselbay
  • Karoo Hoogland / Sutherland
  • Beaufort West
  • Hantam / Calvinia
  • Matzikama / Vredendal

Furthermore, a level 2 warning was issued for these parts of the country. 

A LEVEL 2 WARNING IS ISSUED FOR THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

  • eDumbe / Paulpietersburg
  • Enoch Magijima – Molteno / Molteno
  • Engcobo / Ncobo
  • Nyandeni / Libode
  • Ingquza Hill / Lusikisiki
  • Mbizana / Bizana
  • Matatiele
  • Ubuhlebezwe / Ixopo
  • uMngeni / Howick
  • Nquthu / Nqutu
  • Abaqulusi / Vryheid/Abaqulusi
  • eMadlangeni / Utrecht
  • Okhahlamba / Royal National Park
  • Senqu / Barkly East

A level 2 disruptive rain warning was issued. The SAWS warned about the flooding of potholes, settlements, and low-lying bridges.

“Difficult driving conditions on dirt roads. Motor vehicle accidents due to slippery roads and reduced visibility. Localized and short-term disruption to essential services (water, electricity, communication network, etc).”
