Level 1 restrictions: Dlamini-Zuma lists 15 things which remain banned

This serves as a timely reminder for the complacent few: Level 1 still comes with restrictions, and Dlamini-Zuma has reeled-off the banned activities.

With fewer restrictions and banned activities for Level 1, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma’s NCCC briefing contained much less drama than we’ve seen previously. Her address to the media and subsequent Q&A session took less than an hour to complete, and in all honesty, there wasn’t much more to add from President Ramaphosa’s speech on Wednesday.

Dlamini-Zuma tackles ‘banned activities’ during the next phase of lockdown

NDZ did clarify a few issues regarding alcohol sales and the retention of a nighttime curfew. But further elaboration on international travel and social gatherings was in short supply. Nonetheless, our COGTA Minister did make herself heard loud and clear when it came to stressing what activities remain firmly off-limits during Level 1.

In total, there are 15 major activities that are still ‘banned’ at this stage of lockdown. Allow us to explain…

Level 1 restrictions: What remains off-limits?

The following rules will be applicable from 00:01 on Monday 21 September

  • Night vigils are forbidden outright.
  • A total of 35 land borders are still closed, despite the relaxed restrictions on international travel.
  • Nightclubs will remain shut while curfew is in place.
  • Initiation schools are still closed, but the government remains in talks with traditional leaders.
  • Passenger ships for international leisure cannot operate at Level 1.
  • Spectators at sports events are still banned for the foreseeable future.
  • International sports fixtures in SA remain off-limits.
  • Travel between the hours of 00:00 – 4:00 is not allowed.
  • Buying alcohol between 17:00 on Friday and 9:00 on a Monday will not be possible, as liquor stores are set to remain shut on the weekend during Level 1.
  • Travel to high-risk countries with rising rates of COVID-19 transmission cannot be permitted.
  • Attending an indoor gathering of 251 people or more is not allowed.
  • Nor is attending an outdoor gathering of 501 people or more.
  • Venues cannot be more than 50% full, in order to respect social distancing laws.
  • Entering a store, a public transport vehicle, or any social enclosed space without a mask or facial covering is a big no-no.
  • Finally, you cannot go to a funeral which has 101 people or more in attendance.
