Learners residing at a school hostel in White River, Mpumalanga, were reportedly robbed of their cellphones and laptops on 3 August.

The learners were told to undress before the suspects took their belongings

The spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the province Brigadier Selvy Mohlala revealed that around seven suspects stormed the hostel. It is alleged that the suspects told the learners to undress before searching them and taking their cellphones and laptops.

Mohlala said the stolen goods were loaded into a Toyota Avanza that belonged to the hostel owner. Both the SAPS and local security companies responded to the incident.

“On their arrival, unfortunately, the suspects had already fled the scene, using the Toyota Avanza as the gateway car,”

said Mohlala.

The Toyota Avanza was found, empty

An immediate search was launched by the security cluster. The empty vehicle was found in about half an hour at Spionkop Road outside White River.

Mpumalanga Provincial SAPS Commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela applauded the teamwork that the security companies and SAPS displayed. Manamela urged people to not purchase stolen goods as they will be charged for the possession of suspected stolen property.

SAPS has since requested that anyone with information on the matter to contact the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111. Members of the community with information can also send it via the MySAPS App. Callers can opt to remain anonymous.
