Elections 2021: Here’s how many councils and seats the major parties have

The final results for the local elections 2021 was announced on Thursday evening, so let break it down and look at the numbers!

The results of the local elections 2021 are finally in! The Independent Electoral Commission announced the 2021 Local Government Elections results on Thursday evening. Let’s take a look at who won what.

THE ELECTIONS TOOK PLACE ON THE 1ST OF NOVEMBER 2021

According to the Electoral Commission, there were 26.1-million voters registered for these elections, of which a total of 12.3 million South Africans voted in these elections.

A total of 213 municipalities across South Africa contested the elections.

THE ANC:

The African National Congress achieved a majority in 161
Municipalities.

  • COUNCILS: 167
  • SEATS: 4,549
  • VOTES: 10,693,893

THE DA:

The Democratic Alliance achieved a majority in 13 Municipalities.

  • COUNCILS: 24
  • SEATS: 1,494
  • VOTES: 5,071,626

THE IFP:

The Inkatha Freedom Party achieved a majority in 10
municipalities.

  • COUNCILS: 16
  • SEATS: 9
  • VOTES: 544

In 66 municipalities no party achieved a majority – which is known as hung councils. In the eight contested metropolitan councils, the top three parties are:

FF+

  • COUNCILS: 0

They are fighting to win material benefits, to live better and in peace, to see their lives go forward, to guarantee the future of their children.”

“We urge them to go out and make the lives of our people better.Go out and ensure that our communities develop and live in peace. Go out and, through your honest and ethical work, guarantee the future of our children,” the Electoral Commission said.
