COVID-19 latest: Confirmed cases in SA increase by 11 381 as death toll nears 40 000

South Africa currently has a cumulative caseload of 1 380 807 along with 39 501 deaths and 1 183 443 recoveries.

The latest COVID-19 figures have been released. According to the Health Ministry, 11 381 new cases were identified in South Africa. As of today, the death toll stands at 39 501, with recoveries at 1 183 443.

Breakdown of new confirmed COVID-19 cases

As per Health Minister Zweli Mkhize’s report, 11 381 confirmed cases were identified during the past 24 hours. Unfortunately, we also lost 647 patients to COVID-19-related illnesses.

As per the report: 139 patients from the Eastern Cape passed away, 28 from the Free State, 93 from Gauteng, 154 from KwaZulu-Natal, 27 from Limpopo, 17 from Mpumalanga, 8 from Northern Cape and 137 from the Western Cape.

At the time of publishing, the Health Ministry conducted 7 820 613 cumulative COVID-19 tests, of which 58 540 were done during the past 24 hours: 31 621 at public facilities and 26 919 at private facilities.

Global statistics

At the time of publishing, the global caseload currently stands at 97,633,207 as of Thursday 21 January 2021, along with 2,091,065 recorded deaths and 70,103,153 recoveries.

The USA has a caseload of 25,057,392 confirmed cases, along with 416,996 total deaths and 14,977,723 recoveries. Approximately 58,322 new cases were recorded over the last 24 hours.

Also in the top five is worst-affected countries is India with a caseload of 10,625,420 while Brazil has a caseload of 8,655,512, Russia with 3,655,839 and the UK with 3,543,646.

France, which used to occupy the fifth spot, dropped down to sixth place. South Africa is currently 15th on the list, preceded by Poland, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Turkey.
