Just In: Confirmed COVID-19 cases in SA surpass 35 000

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced that COVID-19 cases in South Africa increased by a whopping 1 455 on Tuesday 2 June.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, on Tuesday 2 June, announced that the confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa have risen to 35 812. Mkhize announced the numbers while in the Western Cape to assess the readiness of intervention teams in hotspots.

The total number of cases is an increase of 1 455, as the total number of confirmed cases stood at 34 357 on Monday 1 June. The death toll has increased by 50 as of Tuesday. This brings national deaths to a total of 755.

A total of 761 534 tests have been conducted to date with 18 792 tests done in the last 24 hours. There have been a total of 18 313 recoveries.

Latest COVID-19 cases by province as of Tuesday 2 June

The following confirmed COVID-19 cases have been detected in each province as of Tuesday: 

  • Gauteng – 4 276 cases;
  • Western Cape – 23 583 cases; 
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 2 637 cases; 
  • Free State – 299 cases; 
  • Eastern Cape – 4 324 cases; 
  • Limpopo – 193 cases; 
  • Mpumalanga – 132 cases; 
  • North West – 271 cases; and
  • Northern Cape – 91 cases.

This comes to a total of 35 812 confirmed cases. 

The Western Cape is still the COVID-19 epicentre with the most positive cases in the country. 

COVID-19 death toll by province as of Tuesday

The following confirmed COVID-19-related deaths have been detected in each province as of Tuesday: 

  • Gauteng – 33 deaths;
  • Western Cape – 568 deaths; 
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 53 deaths; 
  • Free State – 8 deaths; 
  • Eastern Cape – 88 deaths; 
  • Limpopo – three deaths; 
  • Mpumalanga – 0 deaths; 
  • North West – one death; 
  • Northern Cape – one death. 

Latest recoveries by province 

Mkhize announced the COVID-19 recoveries as follows: 

  • Gauteng – 2 060 recoveries;
  • Western Cape – 12 436 recoveries; 
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 1 248 recoveries; 
  • Free State – 123 recoveries; 
  • Eastern Cape – 2 123 recoveries; 
  • Limpopo – 145 recoveries; 
  • Mpumalanga – 86 recoveries; 
  • North West – 59 recoveries; 
  • Northern Cape – 33 recoveries.
