COVID-19: Cases up 7 983, deaths increase by 299 on Monday 16 August

The Western Cape reported.the most new COVID-19 cases in the last 24-hours, with 2 119 new infections. 299 more people have died.

The latest COVID-19 figures released by acting Health Minister Mmamaloko Kubayi-Ngubane on Monday evening report that cases have increased by 7 983 in the last 24-hours, meaning that the total number of infections that have been accumulatively reported since March 2020 has risen to 2 613 5961. 

Sadly, over the last 24-hours alone, a further 299 people have died from COVID-19, meaning that a total of 77 440 people have succumbed to the virus since the first death in March 2020. 

A total of 2 282 809 have recovered having tested positive for COVID-19, representing  a recovery rate of 91.2%.

Provincial COVID-19 case breakdown Monday 16 August

The following confirmed COVID-19 cases have been recorded in each province over the last 24-hours on Monday 16 August:

  • Eastern Cape – 1 438 new cases, 9 742 active cases;
  • Free State – 472 new cases; 13 466 active cases;
  • Gauteng – 694 cases; 12 890 active cases;
  • KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) – 1 949 cases; 45 789 active cases;
  • Limpopo – 78 cases; 3 060 active cases;
  • Mpumalanga – 520 cases; 5 145 active cases;
  • North West – 241 cases; 18 771 active cases;
  • Northern Cape – 472 cases; 6 029 active cases;
  • Western Cape – 2 119 cases, 38 428 active cases; and
  • Unallocated –  0 cases, 0 deaths.

Latest vaccine figures:  

A total of 9 557 542 people have received either the Pfizer or Johnson and Johnson jab in South Africa to date, with 170 413 vaccines having been administered to members of the South African public on Monday 16 August.
