COVID-19 latest: Health Department records 3 641 new cases
The National Health Department has reported more than 3 000 new COVID-19 infections over a 24-hour period. Here’s what you need to know.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, on Thursday 20 May, announced that the confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa had risen to 1 625 003. Mkhize also reported a daily increase of 3 641.
An updated death toll of 55 568 was also reported. A total of 11 246 917 tests have been conducted to date with 39 612 new tests reported. There have also been 1 531 993 recoveries thus far, representing a recovery rate of 94.2%.
In terms of active cases, Gauteng is leading with 10 382. The Northern Cape follows with 6 814 active cases and thereafter the Free State with 6 523 active cases.
LATEST COVID-19 CASES BY PROVINCE AS OF THURSDAY 20 MAY
The following COVID-19 cases have been detected in each province as of Thursday:
- Eastern Cape – 196 862 cases
- Free State – 96 244 cases;
- Gauteng – 439 391 cases;
- KwaZulu-Natal – 338 473 cases;
- Limpopo – 64 642 cases;
- Mpumalanga – 80 545 cases;
- North West – 72 106 cases;
- Northern Cape – 46 068 cases; and
- Western Cape – 290 672 cases
- Unknown – 0 cases.
COVID-19 DEATH TOLL BY PROVINCE AS OF THURSDAY
The following confirmed COVID-19-related deaths have been detected in each province as of Thursday:
- Eastern Cape – 11 635 deaths;
- Free State – 4 110 deaths;
- Gauteng – 10 965 deaths;
- KwaZulu-Natal – 10 474 deaths;
- Limpopo – 2 380 deaths;
- Mpumalanga – 1 424 deaths;
- North West – 1 844 deaths;
- Northern Cape – 1 006 deaths;
- Western Cape – 11 730 deaths.
LATEST RECOVERIES BY PROVINCE
Mkhize announced the latest COVID-19 recoveries as follows:
- Eastern Cape – 184 724 recoveries;
- Free State – 85 611 recoveries;
- Gauteng – 418 044 recoveries;
- KwaZulu-Natal – 323 690 recoveries;
- Limpopo – 61 820 recoveries;
- Mpumalanga – 77 749 recoveries;
- North West – 65 145 recoveries;
- Northern Cape – 38 248 recoveries; and
- Western Cape – 276 962 recoveries.
ACTIVE COVID-19 CASES BY PROVINCE
- Eastern Cape – 503 active cases ;
- Free State – 6 523 active cases;
- Gauteng – 10 382 active cases;
- KwaZulu-Natal – 4 309 active cases;
- Limpopo – 442 active cases;
- Mpumalanga – 1 372 active cases;
- North West – 5 117 active cases;
- Northern Cape – 6 814 active cases; and
- Western Cape – 1 980 active cases.
VACCINE ROLLOUT
The total vaccinated under the Sisonke Programme as of Thursday is 480 665. These vaccinations were with the one-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine and are therefore completed vaccinations.
The total vaccinated in Phase Two as of 17:10 on Thursday 20 May is 116 741. These vaccinations were with the first dose of Pfizer vaccine. On Thursday, 177 sites were operational; 155 public sector sites and 22 private sector sites.
