Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, on Friday 15 January, announced that the confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa had risen to 1 311 686. Mkhize also reported a staggering daily increase of 14 880 since the last report.
An updated death toll of 36 467 was also reported with 615 new deaths reported. A total of 7 498 780 tests have been conducted to date with 65 209 new tests reported. There have also been 1 062 690 recoveries thus far, representing a recovery rate of 80.9%.
In terms of active cases, KwaZulu-Natal is leading with roughly 69 000. Gauteng follows with 49 000 active cases and thereafter the Western Cape with 39 000 active cases.
