KZN Provincial commissioner welcomes swift arrest for farm robbery

KZN Police Commissioner has applauded the swift arrest of suspects who robbed a farmer at gun point in Mooi River, KwaZulu-Natal.

KwaZulu-Natal(KZN) Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has applauded police officers and security officials for their swift response following a robbery on a farm in Mooi River, which resulted in the arrest of eight suspects and recovery of eleven firearms.


According to the police, on Friday, 23 April, the victim was in his office at the farm in Mooi River when two vehicles with five men arrived.

“The men entered his office and held him up at gunpoint. They robbed him of his jewellery, laptops, a watch, cellphone, firearms and the contents of the safe.  The victim’s legs and hands were tied before the suspects fled the scene in their vehicles. All role-players were informed of the robbery and they sprang into action.”

KZN police spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker said that one of the suspect’s vehicles was spotted travelling at a high speed on the N3 freeway towards Pietermaritzburg.

Police officers from Mooi River SAPS, the Pietermaritzburg K9 Unit and Pietermaritzburg Public Order Police together with security officers from Magma security pursued the vehicle.

Following a high-speed chase, the team were able to intercept the vehicle at Camperdown where five suspects including a female were placed under arrest.


Brigadier Naicker added that the suspects were found in possession of five firearms as well as other items belonging to the victim. The suspect’s vehicle was impounded for further investigation.

“Following further investigation, the team proceeded to KwaMashu where three suspects were arrested whilst a second vehicle as well as six firearms was seized”.

“The men were found in possession of jewellery and other items taken during the robbery. The eight suspects, who are aged between 24 and 51, are expected to appear in court soon in connection with the robbery.”


The excellent working relationship that exists between security officials and police officers on the ground which has resulted in the arrest of these notorious criminals must be commended.

“I wish to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire team that succeeded in capturing these thugs. We encourage all role-players in the crime-fighting sphere to continue to pool our resources and collaborate to defeat the scourge of criminality”, said Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi
