KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube says the death of Big Nuz member Mandla ‘Mampintsha’ Maphumulo is a devastating blow.

Maphumulo passed away on Saturday morning, 24 December, at a hospital in Durban. The artist was hospitalised earlier this week after suffering a minor stroke.

Dube-Ncube said the devastating blow is made worse because Mampintsha passed away a day before Christmas, at the height of the festive season, soon after releasing a hit song Ngeke Ngivume.

The Premier said the entertainment industry is poorer with the sudden exit of Mampintsha, who put KwaZulu-Natal on the entertainment map with his music and recording label, West Ink Records, which produced Babes Wodumo and Distruction Boyz, among other artists.

“We learned with shock and sadness about the untimely passing of our star here in KZN and the entertainment industry. We send our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and entertainment industry. As a province, we share the pain of his untimely loss – it is a big loss for all of us in KwaZulu-Natal,” she said.

Dube-Ncube said they are consoled by the fact that Mampintsha excelled in his work as an artist, and they also hope that his family will be comforted in knowing he executed his job for the country and the province with excellence and aplomb.

KZN MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Amanda Bani-Mapena also expressed shock and sadness at the passing of Mampintsha.

Bani-Mapena said what was admirable about the 40-year-old Gqom and Kwaito artist was that when he branched out on his own, he helped launch a number of other careers, giving many disadvantaged youth an opportunity and platform to showcase their talents and help put food on the table for their own families.
