An off-duty metro cop from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) was discovered dead in his vehicle, which was parked on the N2 near the old airport South of Durban, on Friday morning.

He had a single gun-shot wound to the chest.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said that the case is under investigation, adding that no arrests have been made.

“An off-duty metro police officer was found with gunshot wound  to the head. His body was found inside the vehicle near the old airport on the N2 freeway. An inquest docket has been opened for investigation by Umlazi SAPS,” said Mbele.

Suspicious scene

The killing took place early in the morning, and emergency services were greeted by a chilling scene when they arrived, with the officer sitting in the driver seat of the vehicle.

Head of Durban Metro Police, Steve Middleton, told TimesLIVE that the officer was one of their members, and said that he knew more about the incident than he was able to comment on.

“I know exactly what happened, but I cannot comment,” he said.

Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson said the officer was declared dead having succumbed to his wounds by the time paramedics arrived on the scene.

“On arrival, paramedics found SAPS in attendance and found a vehicle parked on the side. On assessment, it was found that a male, believed to be in his 40s and believed to be a policeman, sustained a gunshot wound to the upper part of his body,” he said.

This is a developing story.
