The inclement weather conditions in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) have led to two fatalities in the eThekwini Metro ward 47 (KwaMashu) and 87 (uMlazi) with two people missing after their car was swept away in Molweni.

It has been pouring in KZN and the heavy rains have ravaged parts of the province, especially infrastructure and people’s homes.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had issued an orange level 5 warning for KZN. Residents in Umdloti and some informal settlements were forced to evacuate their homes after they were flooded.

Residents have been urged to follow instructions given by disaster officials and law enforcement in response to the incidents that have been caused by inclement weather conditions.

Disaster management teams have reportedly been responding to incidents such as mudslides, structural collapses and flooded roads.

KZN COGTA spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila said efforts have commenced in areas such as kwaDabeka and Inanda in eThekwini to evacuate residents in high-risk areas into community halls.

Mzila said disaster management teams continue to monitor low river crossings in the Ray Nkonyeni, Umzumbe and Umdoni municipalities.

“Residents who are directed to evacuate their properties are urged to follow instructions given to them by disaster management officials.

“Motorists are also urged to not travel at night as visibility will be greatly reduced, especially in areas where roads are obstructed by mudslides and falling trees.”

Earlier on Monday, residents in KZN were also urged to stay at home if possible or delay travelling due to the heavy rains.

Residents residing in low lying areas were also asked to seek shelter on higher ground as the severe heavy rains is expected to cause localised flooding.
