People residing in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, have not had water for several days. The eThekwini Municipality has issued updates on numerous areas within itself with regard to the ongoing water outages.

Infrastructure damage results in water outages in Durban

People have been sharing their frustrations about not having water or electricity through a number of social media platforms. The north, south, inner, outer west and central parts of Durban have not had water.

The water outages were reportedly caused due to damage to infrastructure caused by the torrential rains and floods in the province.

Complaints have been surfacing online of water tankers allegedly not visiting impacted areas. Umgeni Water told IOL that two aqueducts were broken during the floods. The aqueducts supply Durban’s water treatment plant.

The breakage resulted in a decreased supply of water to the city. Shami Harichunder of Umgeni Water confirmed the breakage. According to Harichunder, the two aqueducts broke during rockfalls in Inanda.

The water that is treated at the plant supplies eThekwini Water and Sanitation. This water is then sold to consumers in the north, south, inner and central west regions of Durban. Harichunder shared that the water shortfall resulted in the inability of eThekwini Water and Sanitation to meet consumers’ full requirements.

“Until the aqueducts are repaired and brought back into full functionality, a deficit in raw water supply will prevail. Similarly, a reduced supply of bulk potable water will continue to prevail. The impact on consumers will be experienced in erratic supply, interruptions in supply or low pressure in taps,”

eThekwini Municipality cannot meet demands as water supply interrupted

The eThekwini Municipality has informed residents of an interruption of water supply in numerous areas of the City. The interruption follows heavy rains that have reportedly caused considerable damage to the Umgeni Water infrastructure.

Due to the extensive damage, the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works is incapable of transferring sufficient amounts of water to eThekwini reservoirs. This, according to the Municipality, means that eThekwini is not able to meet the full water demands of its consumers.

The eThekwini Municipality shared that most areas within itself will experience a shortage of water supply. Certain areas have already been impacted by the water supply interruption. Read the full story here.
