KZN: Double murder suspect arrested after being on the run

SAPS KZN says the man allegedly killed an elderly woman and her daughter at their home in Oribi Village in Pietermaritzburg

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has managed to arrest a 38-year-old man who had been wanted by them for the brutal killing of two women in Pietermaritzburg.

The suspect was nabbed by a police officer who had grown suspicious after seeing him in the Bluff area on 14 June 2022.

“When he saw the police officer he dropped his head and walked into the shop. The officer became suspicious and alerted his colleague about his suspicions. He then followed the man inside the shop while his colleague stood guard at the entrance of the shop. When he approached the man who was at the till he noticed that he was trying to avoid eye contact with him. The police identified the man as a wanted suspect for a double murder that was circulated recently,” said SAPS KZN spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo in a statement.

The man was subsequently arrested  and detained at Brighton Beach SAPS, he was charged for two counts of murder, robbery and theft of a motor vehicle.

MAN ACCUSED OF MOTHER AND DAUGHTER’S MURDER

According to SAPS KZN, the charges against the suspect are in connection with the savage killing of an elderly woman and her daughter at their home in Oribi Village in Pietermaritzburg.

The bodies of the 75-year-old woman and her 58-year-old daughter were discovered on 26 May 2022.

“They were allegedly stabbed with a sharp instrument at the back of their heads. Nothing was taken inside the house expect the vehicle that was stolen. The vehicle was recovered in Amanzimtoti the following day,” Ngcobo added.

He made an appearance at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court on Friday, 17 June 2022, for murder, robbery and theft of a motor vehicle and he was remanded in custody. The matter will be in court again on Monday, 20 June 2022.
