Eskom said the adverse weather in KwaZulu-Natal has led to a number of electrical faults across the province on Saturday, 28 August. The national power supplier said the rain and cold were to blame and explained how customers can log electricity disruptions.

The cold front, which is causing rain and snow in several provinces, is causing electricity usage to surge in KZN, said Eskom. Earlier in the week the power supplier said it was preparing to deal with similar faults in the Eastern and Western Cape.

“Although there is enough generation capacity, the high electricity usage is leading to the overloading of networks, resulting in equipment failure and power loss,” said Eskom. “Customers are urged to manage the amount of electricity used in order to reduce faults caused by overloading.”

The power supplier said customers affected by disruptions must treat all electrical installations as live and dangerous, as the electricity supply may be restored without prior notice.

To report an electricity outage and follow up on progress, customers are encouraged to use the MyEskom Customer App – available on Android and Apple devices – or use the Alfred Chat bot.
