KwaZulu-Natal reports a decrease in road crashes and fatalities

During the 2022/23 festive holiday season, the province of KwaZulu-Natal saw a 13% decrease in road crashes and fatalities

KwaZulu-Natal has seen a significant decrease in road crashes and fatalities during the 2022/23 festive season holidays.

13% reduction in road crashes and fatalities

The province is pleased that the early indications point to a significant decline as it evaluates the effectiveness of enforcement actions for the holiday season.

The province had set a target of a 10% reduction, and current indications place them at a 13% reduction.

The majority of vacationers are currently returning, therefore the situation is being watched.

Currently, there is a lot of traffic, mostly on the N2 and N3.

There are more provincial routes connecting smaller towns that are closely watched by local law enforcement.

The National Traffic Police, and the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) are also keeping an eye on this.

During the holiday season, more than 88 502 vehicles were stopped, and more than 10 730 traffic infractions resulted in charges being levied against other road users.

MEC for Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka praised the law enforcement agencies for their efforts throughout the Festive Season, stating that their visibility and dedication were having a beneficial impact.

“Whilst we are at a preliminary stage of the assessment with our performance, but all indications are pointing to a decrease on both crashes and fatalities. We are however not taking our eyes off the ball as our enforcement teams are still monitoring the movement of on the road. Our plan will be to monitor all our network until the school’s are opened. We are also encouraged by the work of our enforcement agencies,” said MEC Hlomuka.

The Department appeals to road users to continue observing traffic regulations and behave responsibly.
