The Western Cape police arrested a suspect for his alleged involvement in a mass shooting in Site C, Khayelitsha on 16 July that left three people dead.

ALLEGED KHAYELITSHA MASS MURDERER ARRESTED

Five people were killed in separate incidents on that fateful Saturday night in Khayelitsha which prompted another visit from the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele.

Kwezi Mphumzi, 34, Mveleli Nobuzana, 36, and Howard Mjamba, 50, were shot and killed in one incident at the corners of Nyebelele and Ntengu Streets in Site C.

“The endeavours of our detectives to pursue every avenue to bring to book those responsible for violent crimes in this province were rewarded with the court appearance of a 30-year-old suspect this morning in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s court,” said South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut.

The suspect was arrested in Khayelitsha on Monday night during a tracing operation. He faces three charges of murder and the hunt for his accomplices continues.

The suspect was previously convicted for possession of an unlicensed firearm in 2017.

In an unrelated incident, the Western Cape’s most wanted suspect, Yanga “Bara” Nyalara, was arrested and appeared in court earlier this month.

The State alleges that the 30-year-old accused is a prominent member of a gang that extorts informal business in Khayelitsha. He is believed to be linked to 18 murders in the area.
