A 45-year-old former detective is expected to appear before the Komga Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 22 August. He allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl in his office at the Kei Mouth police station earlier this month.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson, Lizzy Suping, said the suspect was arrested by the police watchdog on Friday, 19 August. He has since resigned from the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The suspect allegedly collected the teenage victim from her home on 6 August for an interview at the police station after she opened a case against her boyfriend.

“On the way to the Police Station, the suspect made some sexual advances to the victim, which she rejected. At the Police Station the suspect took the victim to an office where he allegedly raped her,” said Suping.

Another IPID spokesperson, Grace Langa, said the teenager escaped from the suspect after she bit his left shoulder and hit him over the head with a bottle until it broke. She then allegedly stabbed the suspect in the shoulder with a bottle shard and threw his cellphone against the wall and stamped on it.

When the suspect picked up his phone and inspected it, the victim ran from his office into the Kei Mouth Community Service Centre (CSC) where she told on-duty officers what had happened and immediately opened a case.

IPID made the matter public on 16 August with Langa’s statement. When The South African enquired about the suspect’s arrest on Wednesday, 17 August, the Directorate said he was still free but they expected him to be arrested soon as investigators were meeting with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on the same day.
