The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal has criticised learners from Zululand who allegedly torched their school after their matric dance was postponed.

Classrooms were torched at Kanye Kanye High School in eDumbe, northern KwaZulu-Natal on the eve of the start of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.

The learners were reportedly upset about the postponement of their matric dance.

KZN Education Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said the incident is very much disappointing to have this done. He said at any given point in time, it was going to be wrong, but it’s even worse when it’s done on the eve of the writing of the learners

The DA said the act is extremely disturbing and must be condemned.

DA KZN Spokesperson on Education, Dr Imran Keeka said clearly the learners did not stop to consider that this is the very school that has brought them to this point in their academics. Nor did they spare a thought for the many learners who will follow them.

Keeka said this was a shameful and abhorrent act and they as a party sincerely hope that police will track down the culprits and throw the law book at them.

“Rural schools are few and far apart. Those who will need the facilities at this particular school will now be forced to travel to find them. At the very least, KZN’s Education Department will have to deploy very expensive temporary structures to the site. This will have a ripple effect on the department’s already constrained finances,” she said.

Keeka also urged the parents of this matric class to assist SAPS in bringing the alleged arsonists to book, saying it is the right thing to do.
