Justice for Lufuno: Teen commits suicide after being bullied

This deeply upsetting case first piqued the attention of provincial education officials on Tuesday. A swift investigation concluded that bullying was a factor in Lufuno’s decision to kill herself, ending her life in the most tragic fashion.

The tortured teen had, reportedly, locked herself away in her room once she returned home from school. She got hold of a large quantity of prescription medication, purposefully overdosing on the unspecified tablets.

Police confirm bullying incident led to suicide

Lufuno was then rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, medics pronounced her dead on arrival. The heart-wrenching details were confirmed by Limpopo Police Brigadier, Motlafela Mojapelo, and a police inquest docket has been opened.

“The police received a call from Siloam Hospital that a learner from Mbilwi High School, Lufuno Mavhungu came to the hospital unconscious and was certified dead on arrival. She was rushed to a hospital at about 18:30 on Monday night.”

Political forces react to Lufuno Mavhungo death

Limpopo Education MEC Polly Boshielo has warned that the alleged bullies ‘will face the music’. The DA, however, doubts that this process will be easy – and they are demanding full transparency from the department.

“We note with dismay and sadness the incident of bullying that occurred yesterday at Mbilwi Secondary School in Sibasa that went viral on social media today. The girl seen bullied in the video committed suicide yesterday after the incident.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the young girl’s family during this very difficult time. The DA is concerned that many incidents of bullying go unreported and no intervention can take place by the department. We call for any report to expedited and published in order to prevent similar incidents in the future.”
