It’s just another day! Eskom has announced it is implementing stage 2 of load shedding on Friday, 13 May 2022, from 17:00 until 22:00.

The embattled power utility has been carrying out load shedding during the evening peak since Monday as it struggles to meet the demand for power.

“The continued shortage of generation capacity during the evening peak will require the implementation of Stage 2 load shedding from 17:00 until 22:00 tonight. Several generating units are expected to return to service starting this afternoon and through the weekend. Eskom will continue to closely monitor the system with a view to adjusting the stage of load shedding accordingly,” said Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha.

Eskom says generating units have returned to service at its Majuba, Tutuka, Grootvlei, Kriel and Matimba power stations since Thursday. But the utility says there is still insufficient capacity to allow the suspension of load shedding because units at the Kriel, Kusile, Majuba, Camden, Matla power stations either tripped or were taken offload for repairs.

“One generation unit at Kusile Power Station is expected to return to service this afternoon. We currently have 2 094MW on planned maintenance, while another 16 305MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns,” Mantshantsha added.

He has once again reminded South Africans that load shedding is implemented as a last resort to protect the national grid.

“The onset of winter has seen increased demand, and this will lead to capacity constraints throughout this period, particularly during the evening and morning peaks. Eskom would like to remind the public that loadshedding is implemented only as a last resort to protect the national grid. We therefore urge all South Africans to continue using electricity sparingly especially between 05:00 – 09:00 in the mornings and 16:00 – 22:00 in the evenings. Eskom will promptly communicate should there be any significant changes to the power system.”
