As we conclude the month of July, South Africa is reminded of the killing of two promising medical students.

A LOT WAS EXPECTED FROM THE JULY MEDICAL STUDENTS

The two medical students, who would’ve contributed immensely to the sector after completing their studies, both died after they were attacked on separate occasions.

Mthunzi Wiseman Zwane (26) was laid to rest on Saturday, 15 July. He was found with 16 stab wounds in the river in Nhlazatshe, Mpumalanga.

He had gone missing on 2 July before his body was found three days later.

Zwane studied medicine in Cuba as part of the Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro Medical Programme(NMFCMP).

In August 2021, he was placed at the University of the Free State to complete his clinical training in South Africa.

Since January 2022, he was doing clinical training as a final-year student at the Dihlabeng Hospital in Bethlehem, together with 13 other students.
Two suspects, aged 18 and 17, were arrested for Zwane’s murder.

THE DEATH OF MANDY MALOKA

Unfortunately, there was no arrest in the murder of Mandy Maloka (Ms Makola M), the final year medical science student at the University of Limpopo.

This is because the suspect in the murder case (her boyfriend) took his own life on 11 July.
