Julius Malema: ‘We did not vote for the DA, we voted against the ANC’

EFF leader Julius Malema says the ANC only has itself to blame for losing all three metros in Gauteng to the Democratic Alliance (DA)

EFF leader Julius Malema has defended the party’s decision to back the DA mainly in the three key Gauteng metros, saying the ultimate intention was to get rid of the ANC.

Malema briefed media at the party’s Winnie Madikizela-Mandela headquarters in Braamfontein on Thursday, 25 November.

The ANC undoubtedly took hit after hit this week as it now does not control any metro in Gauteng, something which Malema says the party only has itself to blame for happening. Now the DA runs Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and Tshwane. The EFF agreed in principle along with ActionSA to vote in support of DA candidates in these metros to prevent an ANC-run council at all costs.

“We as the collective leaders of the EFF took a correct and justified decision to vote against the ANC in different municipalities. We did so because the people of SA have rejected the ANC and they have sent a clear message that they are sick and tired of the ANC government,” Malema said.

‘THE EFF HAS NO COALITION AGREEMENT WITH THE DA’

Julius Malema also reiterated that there is no coalition deal on the cards between the EFF and the DA.

“The EFF has no coalition with the DA, and the EFF has no coalition with the DA. The DA won municipalities without any coalition deal, and it ends there,” Malema said.

The DA has made it clear that it has no plans of governing together with the EFF due to its difference in values and policy. But ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba has also reiterated that the only way his party can enter into a coalition with the DA is if it includes the EFF.

“When a white man says do not vote for me, we vote for him by force. The DA we gave them power, let’s see what they do. We do not blackmail anyone; we vote according to what makes sense at that time. In any municipality, anything that is presented and is based on the best interest of our people, we will vote for it. We do not vote for ideology, we vote for service delivery. We will vote for any budget and motion that speak to service delivery,”
