John Steenhuisen has delivered his Heritage Day message on Friday, and used the opportunity to praise the diversity of South Africa – and his own party. The DA leader has implored voters to turn their backs on the likes of the ANC and the EFF, who he claims are trying to ‘divide the country’.

2021 Elections latest: How will it pan out?

The DA is preparing to share its manifesto for the 2021 Elections tomorrow.

The vote, which gets underway on Monday 1 November, is proving a very tough race to call. Although the ANC is likely to retain a large slice of the electorate’s backing, there are no guarantees that they will break past the 50% mark – which would be a first in post-apartheid SA. Steenhuisen is hopeful the DA can make some in-roads.

John Steenhuisen trumpets ‘diverse DA’

After barely scraping 20% of the public’s support in 2019, the official opposition has been rocked by high-profile resignations, qualification scandals, and internal party squabbles. Steenhuisen hopes to draw a line under all that however, by promoting the DA as South Africa’s ‘most diverse and tolerant party’ of all time.

“I am proud to lead the most diverse, most tolerant party in our country’s history. I see, in the DA’s vibrant diversity, the incredible potential that a united South Africa has. And I want to invite you to be part of this too.”

“We are a bunch of people who only care about building our country into something much better than it is today. And when others try to convince you to side with their parties that only care for and fight for a particular little slice of South Africans, tell them ‘no thanks’. Tell them you have bigger plans for this country.” | John Steenhuisen

A Heritage Day message from John Steenhuisen

It’ll be a tough sell, but John Steenhuisen and his supporters believe that they are the only party that wants to unite South Africa, rather than split it – a message he was keen to share in his Heritage Day message:

“On this Heritage Day, let us remember what those authors of our Constitution envisaged for us. Let us each enjoy celebrating our rich diversity, but let us also remember that there is far more that unites us than that which divides us.”
