“Fire Gigaba for the sake of all South Africans” – John Steenhuisen lets rip

Just hours after firing Tom Moyane from SARS, John Steenhuisen wants Cyril to give Malusi Gigaba the boot after his horror-week.

Malusi Gigaba is very much on the ropes on Thursday, after the Constitutional Court dismissed his appeal over lying under oath during the Fireblade saga. John Steenhuisen just couldn’t help chipping in, either.

Political chatter in Mzansi suggests that Gigabyte’s days are numbered. It would cap an exceptionally horrific week for the minister, whose leaked “sex tape” seems like a blessing in comparison to the last few days.

Malusi Gigaba and his week from hell

On Wednesday, the Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, filed her explosive report which revealed that Gigaba had violated the Constitution of South Africa by lying under oath. Mkhwebane also noted that the Home Affairs minister had violated the Executive Ethics Code, for which he will be held responsible by parliament.

We reported on Tuesday that he may also face court for an unpaid home affairs bill from almost ten years ago. When it rains, it absolutely belts it down.

John Steenhuisen reacts to the Gigaba news

Steenhuisen, the DA chief whip, reacted to ConCourt’s decision in typical fashion. He called upon President Cyril Ramaphosa to get rid of the home affairs minister, labelling this crisis “a watershed moment for the ANC’s new dawn”:

“Our message to Ramaphosa is clear: fire Gigaba for the sake of all South Africans who have endured the scourge of corruption for too long and begin to put an end to the State Capture project once and for all.”

“This is a watershed moment wherein the president’s ‘New Dawn’ is being put to the test. The failure of the president to dismiss Gigaba will mark his definitive vote in favour of dishonesty and corruption.”

“The judgment also removes any basis on which the Minister may hope to be vindicated and leaves no doubt that his conduct merits the harshest sanction.”

John Steenhuisen will now lead the charge against Gigaba in Parliament, vowing to discover exactly how much “this futile exercise” by Gigaba has cost the taxpayer. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: There’s no better soap opera than the one called “South African politics”.
