Rand Water says that the bulk network is severely strained due to high water usage and recent power trips at various plants.
In a statement, Johannesburg Water Communication said that the above has resulted in low water levels within the network. Johannesburg Water has since requested that customers in lower-lying areas reduce their water usage to assist with the recovery of constrained systems.
“Several Johannesburg Water systems remain at critically low levels as systems are not recovering due to high water usage coupled with the effects of last week’s Rand Water power outages,” it said.
While the supply at Commando Road meter, Central, Sandton, Roodepoort and Soweto systems are being monitored, there are highly impacted systems at Johannesburg Water. These are as follows:
Crosby, Brixton and Hursthill. All three systems are critically low;
Eagle Nest, Glenvista and Naturena reservoirs are at low levels;
Crown Gardens reservoir is at critically low levels, however, pumps are reinstated to supply water to Crown Gardens Tower. South Hills Tower is on bypass supply due to lower supply from Rand Water’s Meyer’s Hill reservoir;
Impacted systems are at low levels;
Alexander Park reservoir is at low levels.
In terms of residents in high-lying areas, Johannesburg Water says they will experience low pressure or no water during this time.
“Johannesburg Water requests customers reduce consumption, only using water for human and household needs, which will significantly assist in recovery the affected systems,” the statement said.
The Rahima Moosa and Helen Joseph hospitals are impacted by this water issue as well. Mobile tankers have been sent to hospitals to sustain their supply. Other affected areas have been provided with stationary water tankers and mobile tankers said the statement.
“Johannesburg Water apologises to customers for the inconvenience caused,” it concluded.
