A Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer was assaulted by two male suspects at the Bara Taxi Rank in Diepkloof, Soweto, on Thursday, 9 February 2023.

METRO POLICE OFFICER ASSAULTED BY DRUNK SUSPECTS

The metro police officer joined environmental health Inspectors on Thursday who was checking compliance at shops at the Bara Taxi rank when the incident happened.

While the environmental health inspectors examined the shops, the officer was approached by intoxicated males. They attempted to get his attention. The officer ignored the two as they were not making sense.

According to the JMPD, the suspects saw that the officer was not interested in what they were saying, they confronted the officer and started to push him.

THE SUSPECTS SLAPPED THE METRO POLICE OFFICER

In his defense, the officer retaliated, and the two suspects commenced to slap him.

JMPD CHIEF CONDEMNS ASSAULT ON OFFICER

A backup was immediately summoned to assist the officer. When the backup arrived, the two drunk suspects fled the scene on foot. The officers gave chase and managed to apprehend the suspects at Collinder Road in Soweto.

The duo was arrested for the assault on a metro police officer and is detained at Diepkloof police station. They will appear in court soon.

The JMPD Acting Chief of Police Angie Mokasi condemns the senseless attack on the metro police officer.

“It is unacceptable that metro police officers continue to be attacked while carrying out their duties,” Mokasi said.
