Johannesburg crime stats for June were released by mayor Herman Mashaba, and while the big fuss was about the increased number of arrests related to driving under the influence (DUI), less was said about the Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s (JMPD) outstanding work in reducing crime.

Mashaba’s government has made a habit of issuing a monthly report on how the Metro Police are striving to turn the tide around the fight against crime.

In June, most of the re-occurring top crimes saw a notable drop, excluding DUI and common robbery.

Johannesburg crime stats: What are the Top 6 crimes?

The City of Johannesburg has done all it can to educate motorists about the dangers of getting behind the wheel under the influence. However, their campaigns and messages have gone unheard, as 149 more drivers were placed under arrest for DUI in June, compared to May.

Mashaba noted that this poses a huge danger to innocent lives on the road and something had to be done to put a stop to it.

“Drunk driving-monitored cases by the Cases Monitoring Unit (CMU) revealed that a total of 580 drunk drivers were apprehended and taken to the nearest police station in June. All of these suspects were found to have paid between R500 and R1 500, and were subsequently released.

“While driving under the influence remains the top concern across the city, the 11 recorded deaths on Johannesburg’s freeways indicate the importance of the JMPD enforcing speed and other related regulations,” the City noted in Monday’s statement.

For the period of June, these are the identified Top 6 crimes:

  • DUI
  • Malicious damage to property
  • Common robbery
  • Hijacking
  • Unlicensed firearms
  • Possession of illicit drugs
