Detectives from the Cape Town police’s Taxi Task Team are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of three men at a taxi rank on Wednesday morning, 22 September. The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the incident is linked to taxi conflict.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the police were called to Joe Slovo taxi rank, near Milnerton, Cape Town, at 9:00 following a fatal shooting at the transport hub.

The dead bodies of three men – aged between 27 and 40 – were found with gunshot wounds. A fourth person was shot and wounded in the shooting. They were transported to a medical facility for treatment.

“Police have opened murder and attempted murder dockets for investigation,” said Potelwa. The identities of the deceased are yet to be determined by the authorities. Potelwa said the Taxi Task Team’s preliminary investigations suggest that the shooting incident is related to taxi conflict.

Earlier this year, approximately 82 people, including ordinary citizens and those linked to the taxi industry, were killed in taxi violence in Cape Town and the greater Western Cape. The taxi violence at that time was linked to a route dispute between two prominent taxi associations who were vying for control of the B97 route between Bellville and Mbekweni in Paarl.

“Anyone who has information about the shooting incident is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit tip-offs via My SAPS App,” said Potelwa.
