A drunk driver hit a JMPD officer on the Soweto highway in Mzimhlope on Sunday, 12 February, and the officer is now in the hospital.

JMPD Officer hit by drunk driver

While conducting a stop and search at the Soweto Highway under the railway bridge in Mzimhlope, Orlando, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Officer Zwidfhela Daniel Singo signaled for a white Hyundai H100 dropside to stop.

The driver failed to halt, however, and collided into Officer Singo.

The driver then fled the scene, but officers gave chase and apprehended him.

During the chase, the driver crashed into another vehicle and tried to flee again, but officers quickly apprehended him.

Police suspected the driver of being under the influence of alcohol and gave him a breathalyzer test. The test showed a reading of 0.73 mg/l, exceeding the legal limit of 0.24 mg/l.

Man arrested for driving under the influence

Police arrested a 55-year-old man and charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, negligent driving, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Police detained the man at Orlando SAPS and opened a case docket for further investigation.

JMPD officer airlifted to hospital after being hit by drunk driver

Serious head and back injuries left Officer Singo in need of medical attention, so he was airlifted to Milpark Hospital where he is now in stable condition.

JMPD Acting Chief of Police, Angie Mokasi, wishes for Officer Singo’s speedy recovery and expressed sadness and concern over the risk that reckless drivers pose to themselves and others on the road.
