The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) generally comes in for a lot of praise amongst residents in the city. While the department is announcing its good work in one arrest over a heroin stash this weekend, it’s trying to deal with the shadow of arresting two of its own officers on Friday.

JMPD: From heroin bust to arresting its own officials

Let’s start with the positive side, shall we? The JMPD revealed on Sunday that together with the Hawks, its K9 unit had arrested one man in Krugersdorp. The suspect was in possession of around 7 kilograms of heroin.

The JMPD says that the heroin stash has a street value of about R1 million. A money counting machine and scale allegedly used to weigh the drugs were also confiscated.

What about the officers arrested for selling ammo?

The department arrested two of its own on Friday. The team received a tip-off earlier in the week, after a man had been arrested at a Randfontein shooting range. Thankfully, he wasn’t found with any heroin.

The Directorate For Priority Crime Investigation then rung the alarm bells, after he was found with rounds of JMPD ammunition. During the arrest, the suspect snitched on the department officials he was allegedly working with.

Police then followed up on the tip-off and arrested the alleged JMPD dealer involved. In total, he was found with over 5 400 rounds of JMPD registered bullets.

Both department officials are set to appear in court on Monday. They face theft and illegal dealing charges, as well as an internal investigation.
