Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said Friday that the jet fuel shortage experienced at OR Tambo International Airport was resolved after meetings with the energy ministry and Airports Company South Africa (ACSA).

JET FUEL SHORTAGE RESOLVED

Mbalula said the shortage was a consequence of the devastating floods that hit KwaZulu-Natal, which affected transport infrastructure and disrupted supply chains.

ACSA has reportedly worked tirelessly to resolve the issue by engaging with the state and other relevant stakeholders.

The jet fuel supply constraints, which resulted in at least one airline cancelling its flights over the weekend, are over and the situation has stabilised, said Mbalula.

“We therefore wish to reassure the aviation sector that there is adequate fuel at OR Tambo International Airport and at all our national airports.

“ACSA is doing everything within its power working closely with oil suppliers to ensure there is adequate fuel stock at all times,” said the transport department.

Mbalula went further and urged airlines to reach out to ACSA if they have any uncertainties about the matter instead of resorting to “drastic measures” such as cancelling flights.
