JANUSZ WALUS’ STABBED IN PRISON

Walus was sentenced to death for the 1993 assassination of the General Secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP), Chris Hani. The sentence was commuted to life imprisonment after the abolition of the death penalty in South Africa.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) said Walus was allegedly stabbed by another inmate from the same housing unit on Tuesday.

According to TimesLive, a well-placed source informed them the attacker attempted to stab Walus in the heart but missed.

The department said a detailed incident report would be provided later and confirmed that Walus was in stable condition under the watch of DCS healthcare officials.

“Stabbing and other forms of disturbances are offences not warranted in a correctional environment, and this case will be investigated,” read a statement.

Before the Constitutional Court ordered his release on parole last week, Chris Hani’s killer was denied parole four times.

His accomplice in the assassination, Clive Derby-Lewis, who organised the hit, was released on medical parole in June 2015 and died of lung cancer in November 2016.

Hani’s widow, Limpho, and the SACP said they would approach the Constitutional Court to have the parole decision reversed.

The SACP, African National Congress (ANC), and alliance partners will embark on a protest on Wednesday outside the Kgosi Mampuru II Prison over the decision to release Walus on Parole.

As previously reported, he is expected to be released in the first week of December and was granted permanent residence for the duration of his parole.

“The Minister of Home Affairs further believes that the heinous crime committed to the people of South Africa by murdering one of the icons of the liberation struggle makes it obligatory that Mr Walus must serve his parole period as part of sentence in the Republic of South Africa,” said the Department of Home Affairs in a statement on Monday, 28 November.
