Nando’s has got Jacob Zuma’s fans’ feathers in fluff, crowing in Mzansi style, that they will boycott the brand for its ‘political’ remarks.
@NandosSA got a fiery grilling on Twitter when JZ’s fans and followers accused the brand of cooking up political drama with its witty meme about former President Jacob Zumaâs conviction and sentencing for contempt of court on Tuesday.
Zuma was convicted and sentenced to 15 months direct imprisonment in the Constitutional Court after he defied its order to appear at the Zondo Commission on state capture. He has been given five days to hand himself over to the police to begin serving his sentence.
Quick to fire up its sense of humour and to court controversy Nandoâs posted about the Jacob Zuma sentencing on Twitter. “A lockdown we can all get behind #JacobZuma #ListenProperly,” Nando’s Tweeted with an accompanying meme. The meme joked: âDo not pass Go, Do not collect seven-hundred and sixty-nine eight-hundred million. Delivery in 5 daysâ.
What immediately followed was a barrage of threats from angry Jacob Zuma fans who said they would immediately stop buying Nandos chicken.
@ThandeKalo stated: âThis day I stop eating Nandosâ and @Bheko_N asked incredulously: âAre you guys joining or taking sides on political battles?â
Up piped another Jacob Zuma fan @Fankie_Mzimela with a threatening word: âThey’re taking sides and it won’t end well. We will hurt their business where it hurts most.â Others like @_AfricanSoil, who was blocked by Nando’s after his angry tweet, were also threatening:
@Korneliyu then ceremoniously lambasted the brand for cooking âBritish chickenâ by posting a screen shotâŚwait for itâŚfrom the brandsâs UK website saying: âYou think that this place is still a fertile Colony, so you are tweeting from S which your last letter.â
But the Jacob Zuma adherent was quickly corrected for the error of his ways by @tlaz who told him: âyou actually have to use the South African website to screenshot not UK…101 friendâ
@van_blessing pleaded: “Uyaphapha Admin… DON’T play politics FOCUS on chicken.â
But @SA_Coconut_7 loved the meme and has made dinner plans: âHappiness in a picture. Nandos for dinner here I come!â
But @flawless_bae_ba disagreed.
A level headed Zuma fan, @Mr_Heronation brought a reality check to the Jacob Zuma meme thread noting: “Look, i’m pro-Zuma but come on guys, Nandos is known for these things. Letâs laugh and move.â
@RonaldPhiri01 joked about the Jacob Zuma meme: âNandos is now starting beefwith #Jacob Zuma. And people thought they were too chicken…to enter the political arena. Before people cry fowl, this is mere satire from Nandos.â
