The uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) has threatened unrest and instability in the country if former President Jacob Zuma goes to jail.

Zuma was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment by the Constitutional Court this week. He was given 5 days to surrender himself to the Nkandla or Johannesburg central police station.

MKMVA REJECTS CONCOURT RULING ON JACOB ZUMA

The MKMVA held a media briefing on the entrance of Zuma’s home in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal. Its spokesperson, Carl Niehaus, a close supporter of the former statesman said that they as MKMVA reject the Constitutional Court ruling and will form a shield to protect him.

“Our comrades of MKMVA will form a human shield to protect President Zuma. We do not want President Zuma to go to jail.

“We have warned that if President Zuma is going to be imprisoned that there will be instability and unrest in SA. If President Zuma continues to be targeted and sent to prison, our country will be torn apart and violence will be inevitable because of this. We have warned that the consequences of imprisoning Zuma will be dire for our nation.”

The media briefing outside Zuma’s home on Friday ended abruptly after journalists were threatened with violence and gun shots were fired.

The Zuma supporters,  some of whom were seen consuming alcohol, had earlier chased away photographers who were taking photos of them outside the former president’s home.

When journalists asked (MKMVA) spokesperson, Carl Niehaus  questions during a press conference held outside Zuma’s home, they were booed and labelled “sell-outs” by a group of the former president’s supporters.

Hundreds of supporters have already gathered at Nkandla, with many more expected to arrive before Sunday 4 July. Many have been chanting struggle songs, some carrying placards saying Justice Khampepe is captured and also saying Jacob Zuma is being targeted, despite the ruling.
