“It’s insane that it’s normal

“It’s insane that it’s normal here” – Trevor Noah says he’s been stopped 10 times by US police

His comments follow the acquittal of an officer who shot dead a 32-year-old black man in his car.

“It’s insane that it’s normal

The much-loved host of The Daily Show has lived in the USA for the last six years and addressed his studio audience between the show’s tapings, talking about the reality of being a black man in the country.

Noah grew up in Soweto during the late 1980s and 1990s and experienced harsh racial treatment under the Apartheid regime, which forcibly separated his white father from his black mother. Now he faces more prejudice stateside:

“I’ve been stopped in rental cars, I’ve been stopped in my car, I’ve been stopped in a car with tinted windows, a car with rims, a car with no rims. I’ve even been stopped in a Tesla!”

The comic’s reaction came after Minessotta police officer Jeronimo Yanez shot dead 32-year-old Philando Castile after pulling him over in his car. He was travelling with his 4-year-old daughter at the time, who witnessed the whole event. Yanez was acquitted of Castle’s murder this week, sparking outrage and widespread condemnation.

In what turned out to be a speech of both humility and tongue-in-cheek humour, Noah revealed his foolproof plan for showing officers he isn’t a threat:

“Whenever I get pulled over the first thing I do is throw my arms out the window and it looks so stupid when you see me. You get to a point where you realise it’s just part of a black person’s life in America. It’s insane that it’s such a normal thing.”

Noah believes that it isn’t racial bias within individual officers, but the institution and it’s training that creates a suspicion of black people in the US.

According to the stand-up, state racism ‘is completely different’ to that of individuals.
